Upcoming hike in TX

Thanks to my manager for pointing out the hikes at Enachanted Rock near Fredericksburg, TX. Apparently it is Texas' version of Stone Mountain, but a bit smaller. We're hoping to go there on Sunday morning for a nice hike and doing a little sight-seeing before Steph has to go back home. Any recommended hikes around Enchanted Rock, or any place near Atlanta? Drop us a line and let us know!

Kennesaw Mountain, Take 2

Steph and I hiked up Kennesaw mountain again yesterday. We both found it to be a lot easier than last week, however, Steph was having a difficult time managing her asthma on the way up. The weather was great, so once we arrived at the top we could see the entire city of Atlanta and all the way out to Stone Mountain (~25 miles). Last week we couldn't see 50 feet due to the fog, so it was a very nice change!

Of course the better weather meant more people and dogs on the trail. I can see this becoming a less desirable hike as we continue toward the spring and the weather improves and the trail traffic continues to climb. We're going to have to check out some of the other trails around the park and see if they are any less traveled. Of course, its also a pretty short hike, so we'll be working on longer hikes -- both time and mileage -- in the near future.

First Hike: Kennesaw Mountain

Steph and I went for our first real hike today. We're going to miss at least two of the scheduled training hikes, so we figured we'd get a head start!

We drove up to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park where we hiked to the top of the mountain and back. It's a short hike, 2.1 miles round trip, with a change of elevation of 657'. We were both huffing and puffing by the time we reached the top! Soon this will be much easier!

About our Hike for Discovery

In exchange for the training and guidance we’ll receive, we’ve committed to raising money for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) to fund research and patient services. Every mile we train will help us prepare for this adventure, just as every dollar we raise will help LLS find treatments and cures for blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and Hodgkin’s disease. LLS has invested more than $360 million over the last 40 years into research that has significantly improved survival rates for thousands. That’s as impressive as the Grand Canyon itself! Their efforts are critical, because blood cancers kill more children in the United States than any other cancer and strike even more adults. An estimated 110,960 new cases of blood cancers will be diagnosed nationwide this year alone.

As some of you may know, Stephanie lost her father, Mitchell Levine, to myeloma in November of 1995. His memory is a powerful inspiration and our completion of this significant physical challenge will be a tribute to his strength. As he always said, “…seven men behind you.”

We’ll need more than seven “men” behind us, so here’s where you come in. While we’re training, you can help us reach our goals by making a donation to LLS. Your contribution will bring those cures a step closer.

Thank you for being part of our Hike for Discovery. Please visit regularly to follow our progress! We sincerely appreciate your support of our efforts and those of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
