I'm in Providence, RI for a few days to do an on-site gig with a client. As I sat — alone — at dinner tonight I had a thought:
Being a consultant means being lonely much of the time. What do I mean?
- Working at home. Alone.
- Working on the road. Alone. Leads to:
- Dining. Alone.
- Drinking. Alone.
- Sitting in the hotel. Alone.
I don't know why I never noticed this before. Tonight the loneliness is bugging me. I guess that means I just need to get back to work so I stop thinking about it.

Being a self-defined social addict, the loneliness was one of the first things I noticed when I became a work-from-home consultant. It might sound weird to say this, but I haven't had a water-cooler conversation in over two years, and I miss them!
But hey, at least we have Skype/MSN/IRC and blogs :)
